Heart to Heart International has worked with Save the Children throughout the past two years to support its work with reception centers along the U.S.-Mexico border. Save the Children’s current work features programs in 38 different reception centers on both the U.S. and Mexico side to protect children and address their immediate needs and to provide resource support and advocacy. In the U.S., the organization is working in all four border states: California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
More people have been coming through the reception centers in 2021 in part due to a change in the Migrant Protection Protocols. Previously, people who sought asylum and had their credible threat interviews approved had to remain in Mexico to await further court dates. Now, those awaiting court dates to continue the immigration process are able to await their next steps in the U.S. Additionally, unaccompanied minors are being processed at the border and transferred to Health and Human Services (HHS) to find appropriate housing and foster care. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the border remains closed for those newly applying to enter the United States.
Heart to Heart International is supporting Save the Children’s work to deliver immediate humanitarian relief to newly arrived children and families.
Last month, HHI sent the following aid to Save the Children in 2021:
- 9,000 Baby Blankets
- 385 Adult Blankets
- 6,300 hygiene kits
- 3,750 One Child One Blanket kits
