Remembering 1996 airlift to India
In April 1996, years after Dr. Gary Morsch’s original visit to Calcutta, India, to meet with Mother Teresa, Heart to Heart International returned with 50 tons of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies worth more than $12 million. The supplies were distributed to hospitals and health care facilities throughout the city, with members of the Heart to Heart International delegation forming human chains to unload the massive quantities of supplies. After all the supplies had been unloaded in their recipient facilities, members of the 85-person delegation broke into groups and visited the facilities, working with patients at hospitals and clinics, and caring for children at Mother Teresa’s Children’s Home. Medical professionals in the delegation treated patients and trained staff in hospitals and clinics, One team of HHI audiologists fitted 150 people with hearing aids, many of those people having never heard before. The team also trained audiology professionals in Calcutta and set up a sound room at a local hospital. |
