Lab Week: Ibn Sina Foundation Expands Access to Care with Point-of-Care Testing

Access to Care

The Ibn Sina Foundation was created in 2001 in recognition of a growing need for access to care in Houston’s underserved communities. Since then, the foundation has expanded to multiple locations, offering a comprehensive range of medical services, including medical, dental, and pediatric care. The foundation is dedicated to serving both new and existing patients and has provided over one million patient visits in its history. It also provides important resources to the community during emergencies and natural disasters.

Expanding Diagnostic Capabilities Through Lab Installation

The Ibn Sina Foundation’s North Shepherd clinic location is now better equipped to serve its patients thanks to its participation in the point-of-care laboratory program with Heart to Heart International (HHI), BD, Henry Schein Cares, and the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics. The clinic was chosen as a recipient of the grant program and in July of 2024, the clinic received a new point-of-care laboratory installation. The installation process included testing equipment and comprehensive staff training by the HHI Laboratory program.

This new lab technology has enabled them to perform a variety of lab tests in-house. These tests include hemoglobin A1c, lipid panel, and rapid testing for conditions like Strep A, Influenza, COVID-19, HIV, and RSV. HHI provided training to the clinic staff on the new testing systems and will continue to offer ongoing support through its first year. This on-site testing allows for same-day results and treatment, which streamlines the care process and improves patient convenience.

Positive Impact on Patients

The new testing capabilities have had a direct and positive impact on patients. For example, the clinic can now offer free A1c testing, which has increased testing rates. Previously, many patients couldn’t afford this important test, and patients have expressed their appreciation for receiving their results quickly. The availability of free A1c testing has also allowed the clinic to expand its screening efforts.

HHI’s team noted the clinic staff’s confidence and expertise in their laboratory processes, as well as the cleanliness and organization of the lab space.

A Commitment to Quality Access to Care

The Ibn Sina Foundation’s commitment to providing accessible and high-quality care is evident in its adoption of this new technology at its North Shepherd clinic and its positive impact on the community.
