HHI Responding to Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl, the first major hurricane of the 2024 season, took a devastating path through the Caribbean, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Beryl became the earliest Category 5 storm in history in the Atlantic, then continued on as a Category 4 storm, unleashing fierce winds, storm surge, and torrential rain, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Multiple Islands Affected

Beryl slammed into the Windward Islands, particularly Grenada and Carriacou, then continued its wrath on Jamaica, a country rarely hit by hurricanes of such magnitude, bringing more than 12 hours of relentless rain, raising concerns about flash flooding. Kingston, the capital city, experienced wind gusts exceeding 80 mph and received over four inches of rain in just 24 hours – more than the average rainfall for the entire month of July.

Early Reports Indicate Widespread Damage

Hundreds of thousands of homes remain without power across the affected islands. Early estimates indicate nine fatalities across four countries, with those numbers likely to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

Heart to Heart International’s Response

Heart to Heart International’s Disaster Response Team is taking action. An assessment team is deploying to Jamaica to meet with local partners and understand the most pressing needs. Hygiene kits, medicine, and medical aid are being prepared for immediate shipment. On July 5, 4,500 hygiene kits shipped to multiple partners in Jamaica to help communities affected by the storm.
