Q&A with Wendy Blackburn
What makes the Heart to Heart International mission meaningful to you?
My career has given me exposure to the challenges and struggles many people face when trying to stay healthy. Heart to Heart’s mission is all about providing this most basic human need – healthcare – to the underserved communities who need it most. And I love that HHI not only provides healthcare access in the moment, but it establishes programs that sustain community health for the longer term.
Tell us a little bit about your professional background?
I’ve held healthcare communications positions at a hospital network, a boutique biotech agency, a public relations agency, and a digital-centric marketing agency. I love it because it’s fast-paced and creative, but also because I find it to be more meaningful than marketing sneakers or energy drinks; we are providing information and hope.
What experience do you have that you hope brings the most value to the board?
Serving on the Executive Committee of a fast-growing business has taught me a lot about the dynamics of both business and people. Both are important to understand in order for an organization to thrive.
What are some of your aspirations for Heart to Heart International this year and beyond?
I’m very fortunate to be involved with Heart to Heart International during a period of great success and rapid growth. My hope is to lead the board to be an engaged, contributing body that support HHI’s ongoing success and helps it stretch what was even thought to be possible.
Tell us a little bit about your personal background?
I love the outdoors, animals, gardening, travel and wine. Combining a few of those passions, my goal is to visit all 63 U.S. national parks. I’m only on #21, so I have a ways to go! I currently live in a suburb of Kansas City (Olathe), with my husband, Darren, and two rescue dogs, Ricky and Bobbi.
